Alton is closing a portion of State Street this week to perform sewer repairs. A recent water line break in the 700 block of State Street in Alton revealed voids under the pavement. The infrastructure is aging, so this project may just be the first of many repairs as the pipes have seen their better days.
Public Works Director Bob Barnhart says the department is keeping a close eye on all of the lines around town.
He says those symptoms occur through everyday wear, for example if a water line breaks, or a truck finds a soft spot in the road. Barnhart says priority is given to the most dangerous problems and the ones that have the greatest impact on transportation. This closure is expected to last until Friday afternoon around.
