The seemingly never-ending task of finding a good parking space in downtown Alton may ease a bit, as the city is buying a large lot in the 400 block of Piasa Street. The lot, currently owned by, makes up an entire city block, with the exception of Danny's Lounge and an office building on the southwest corner of the lot.

Alton Mayor Tom Hoechst says one of the first things they will be doing is pulling out the obstructions and opening up the space.

Hoechst comments

He says at least 100 new free spaces will be opened up with the purchase. Previously, it would cost $3 to park there, or risk a $200 tow bill. The city will pay for the lot out of TIF funds, not to exceed $225,000.
