Demolition is scheduled to begin today on an awning that has partially collapsed in Upper Alton. As a result, three businesses have been unable to open since the situation developed late Friday afternoon. The damage was confined to just the awning in the Washington Square Shopping Center.
Maneke Jewlers President Charlie Maneke says their business did not take any damage, and there were no injuries.

He says the main support beam for the awning apparently rusted through, leading to what he described as a slow process of coming partially down. Maneke says based on what he has been told, he expects to reopen on Friday.
