The City of Alton will celebrate its 175th anniversary of inception in 2012 and preparations to commemorate the event are underway. The city is working with several organizations including local schools, the Alton Little Theater, Hayner Public Library and several other groups on various projects.

Alton Regional Convention and Visitor's Bureau President Brett Stawar says the commemorative t-shirts are already available.

Stawar comments

There are also commemorative lapel pins, and all merchandise will be available at the CVB at the corner of Piasa and Broadway. The Alton Little Theater is planning to focus next year's Vintage Voices on people who were living in Alton as close to 175 years ago as possible. A signature event is also being planned by the city and would take place sometime in July.
