Alton Alderwoman Alice Martin has died. The representative of the city's 4th Ward had been sick for a few months, missing recent city council meetings. She died around mid-day on Tuesday at the age of 75.
Alton Mayor Brant Walker says Martin was a good woman and a hard worker, and tells The Big Z she was his alderman before he became mayor.

Walker says a replacement will be named to fill her unexpired term, which is up for re-election in April. Martin had apparently confided in her family whom she wanted to fill her spot, should her health take a turn for the worse. Arrangements for Martin are being handled through the Harrison Funeral Chapel, and can be viewed here: http://www.altondailynews.com/obits/details.cfm?id=12388#.V_-tGyT4b5g
