Fitting the Illinois State Fair’s mission of promoting agriculture, Gov. Pat Quinn used Ag Day at the fair to sign a handful of bills doing just that. One of the bills recognizes the former U. S. agriculture secretary, John Block, by naming the Illinois Department of Agriculture building for him. Block was the state’s agriculture director before being tapped by the Reagan administration to run the USDA.

Other bills: add to the number of vehicles which must display the orange triangle indicating a slow-moving vehicle; give the state more power to help pastures damaged by wildlife; assess fees to livestock producers to help the state run a waste-mitigation program for CAFO’s (Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations); and promote research into helping fertilizers retain nutrients despite rain.
