A Metro East woman accused of taking donations under the ruse that she had cancer is facing an additional felony charge according to authorities. According to Troy Police Chief Brad Parsons, 25-year old Melissa Barton was charged with an additional count of Felony Theft By Deception on Wednesday. She was taken into custody at Abraham County Capitol Airport.
Last week Barton was charged with one count of felony theft by deception after police reported that she asked for and collected money from people to fund cancer treatment for herself and her son, who she claimed had been diagnosed with leukemia. Police say she also used the names Melissa Dawn Pruett Barton and Missy Barton Pruett. This is an ongoing investigation, and anyone who thinks they may have been deceived by her is urged to call Troy Police at 618-667-6731. Barton is currently being held on a $100,000 bond.
