A special education teacher accused of threatening to blow up a local high school where she works is expected in federal court today. 36-year-old Michelle L. Smith of Jerseyville allegedly left the note last week in a bathroom at Calhoun High School in Hardin. The school was evacuated as a result of the threat.
Bomb squads from the Illinois Capitol Police and the Illinois Secretary of State responded to the scene, but nothing suspicious was found at the school and authorities haven't released a possible motive in the case. Smith was arrested last Tuesday on state charges of making a terrorist threat act, and then federal charges of conveying a false threat were filed last Thursday and she was then transferred into federal custody. Her bond was set at $500,000.
