The accomplice in a staged bank robbery in December of 2014 is heading to prison. 58-year-old Eugene Babcock of Moro pleaded guilty nearly a year ago to his role in the staged robbery. He was sentenced this week to 28 months in federal prison.
Babcock admitted to being the so-called masked man that held up former Liberty Bank manager Matthew S. Liebheit the morning of December 13, 2014. Investigators say Liebheit's claim that a masked gunman forced him into the Bethalto Liberty Bank before opening in December of 2014 and taking more than $200,000 from the vault was a lie. In addition to the prison sentence, Babcock will be required to return the balance of the stolen money: $165,862.
