Dec. 15 has come and gone, but the deadline for Obamacare enrollment has not. Dec. 15 was the original application deadline for those who wanted health insurance coverage starting Jan. 1, but due to the malfunctioning website, the date has been moved, says Dan Yunker, chief executive of Land of Lincoln Health, a non-profit co-op offering insurance on the exchange.

“The date has been moved to the 23rd of December, so for those individuals that would like to have effective coverage on Jan. 1, they need to make a selection of a plan that fits their needs by Dec. 23,” he said. However, those who are uninsured can still buy after that date, but their coverage won’t start until the following month. Coverage isn’t required until April 1. Enrollment so far in Illinois is about 5 percent of the state’s goal of 140,000.
Obamacare enrollment is applicable only to those who don’t have health insurance. Those who are in Medicare, Medicaid or a group policy are not affected. The potential Obamacare market in Illinois is estimated at 937,000.
