According to some studies, Americans throw away 25% more waste during the Thanksgiving to New Year’s holiday season than any other time of year. This extra garbage amounts to 1 million tons of waste, according to the "The Use Less Stuff Report" and Environmental Protection Agency. With these numbers in mind, the local office of the Sierra Club is asking the public to make an effort to recycle as much as possible this holiday season.
Alton Sierra Club's Chirstine Favilla says about 75% of the materials generated through the holidays can be recycled.
She reminds styrofoam packing does not belong in your home recycling, but you can return packing peanuts to most local UPS stores. A call before you drop in is usually appreciated. And, she says to keep an eye out for your municipality's Christmas Tree Recycling Program, too.
