On July 3, 2012, Jay Rawson was taken to the ER due to extreme headaches & mental confusion. A mass was found on his brain & he was immediately transported to Barnes. After more testing, they found a large tumor on the left frontal lobe of his brain & a smaller one on the right. On July 5, Jay underwent a 6 hour surgery to remove as much of the tumors as possible. The doctor was able to remove a 10 cm (a bit larger than a baseball) portion from the left side, as removing it all could have damaged his speech. Unfortunately, none could be removed from the right side. Jay has been diagnosed with a Grade 3 Oligoastrocytoma, a rare type of recurring brain cancer, that does not respond to standard chemotherapy. He is currently undergoing 6 weeks of radiation. Jay has decided to participate in a clinical study for a new type of chemotherapy in hope that it will help his case & others who are affected by tragic disease.
